Islamic Character Campaigns Year 2003/2004

Kindness

In Islam, every good deed is an act of charity and has a special reward from Allah. A Muslim should try to be kind to all people, even if it is only by saying a kind word. Sometimes, this may be difficult, because some people are not always nice to you. At such times, you should remember that you will receive reward for each act of kindness from Allah an that He is watching all your efforts.

The people who return evil with good are especially liked by Allah. The Quran teaches us that a good act always wins out in the end. The Quran tells us:

Be kind, as Allah has been kind to you.

(Al-Qasas 28:77)

Anas Bin Malik, who used to frequent the Prophet’s assembly, said that whenever the Prophet missed seeing any of his companions for a period of three days, he

  1. used to inquire about the person.

  2. would pray for him.

  3. and if he happened to be ill, would pay him a visit.

Once a man came to the Messenger of Allah but on entering his presence, started trembling with fear. Prophet Muhammad (s.aw.) seeing the visitor terribly shaken and nervous, smiled and comforted him with utmost tenderness, saying: “Take it easy, I am no king but the son of a Quraish woman who used to eat dried meat.” How wonderfully he comforted the frightened Arab nomad who, accustomed to the days of Jahiliyyah, was scared to death on entering the Prophet’s presence.

Such examples of kindness help build a strong and coherent society spreading love and affection amongst Muslims.

Narrated by Jabir Bin Abdullah: the Prophet said, “If anyone possesses these three characteristics, Allah will give him an easy death and bring him to Paradise:

  1. gentleness towards the weak.

  2. affection towards parents.

  3. kindness to slaves.

(Tirmidhi)

Narrated by Ali ibn Abu Talib: the Prophet said, “ A Muslim should do six acts of kindness to another:

  1. he should greet when he meets him.

  2. accepts an invitation when he is given one.

  3. says “Allah have mercy on you” when he sneezes.

  4. like for others what he likes for himself.

  5. visit him when he is ill.

  6. and go see him when he dies.
