Islamic Character Campaigns Year 2003/2004

Obedience

Obedience to Allah

This is the first preference above all others. Any other will only be accepted if it is in accordance with the laws and commandments of Allah.

Prophet s.a.w. said: “There is no obedience of the created in disobedience of the creator.”

(Qur'an 64:16, 51:56-58, al-Baqara: 21)

Obedience to His Messenger

We can only obey Allah by obeying the Prophet s.a.w., As Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said: “Who so ever obeys me, he in fact obeys Allah and who so ever disobeys me, he disobeys Allah.

(Qur'an 24:54, 4:80, 5:92)

Obedience to the one in authority

This is the concept of obeying the leader amongst us. This type of obedience is limited with two important conditions:

  • The one who be an authority must be a Muslim

  • His/her commands must always be in accordance with the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

Hadith: There is no obedience in transgression. Verily, obedience is in good deeds. (Bukhari and Muslim)

The greater the attachment to Allah, the stronger is the spirit of obedience in a person.

Why some people have trouble in obeying the leader?

  1. The ego

  2. Usually people’s egos prevent them from listening to the leader. In an Islamic system, the leader has certain rights over the ummah.

  3. The weak iman

  4. In this case, one might not be able to control his/her nafs, because he/she has a weak iman. He/she may announce his opposition and try to pull others to his/her side.

Obedience in the family

Within the family, synchrony and harmony can be achieved and love and respect can flourish. Obedience is a major component of this formula.

  1. Husband and wife relationship

  2. For the family to function properly a wife needs to obey her husband. (Qur'an 4:34)

A woman who obeys her husband provides the best role model for the children to learn.

  3. Obedience of children to the parents:

  4. Children need to obey their parents (unless the husband or parents are disobedient to Allah. The obedience of children to their parents is actually the “training ground” for eventual submission to Allah. (Qur'an 4:59)
