Saudi Arabia
Traditional Custom of Muslim's Women In Saudi Arabia (1)

Traditional Saudi Arabian dress is symbolic of the people’s ties to the land, their heritage and Islam.  Generally, men wear a thobe, an ankle-length white cotton shirt with a tagia, a small cotton skull cap and a ghutra, a large square of cotton worn on the head which is held in place by a black cord coil or igal.  Shorts are not generally worn by Western men in public.

Saudi women wear an abayah, a black cloak and veil at all times in public and in the presence of men who are not close relatives.  Many women cover their face entirely and some may also wear socks and gloves.  However, underneath the abayah, Saudi women take great pride in their appearance and wear fashionable clothing.  Western women should also wear an abayah in public as a sign of respect for local customs.  Many Western women chose not to wear a headscarf, although it is generally advisable to carry one with you.

Saudi children generally wear Western-style clothes until they reach puberty.  From that time onwards the more traditional forms of dress will be adopted.  Abayahs should be worn by Western girls when they reach puberty.

There are no restrictions on clothing in compounds.
